Renovations

Here it is, the promised post about our renovations!
These are a few pictures of the before - well not exactly before. Ryan and his dad had already put drywall on the ceiling when I remembered that I should be taking pictures so we could compare before and after (I should have been taking pictures while they were putting the drywall up on the ceiling because that was quite an adventure!). This room used to be where we entered in from our garage. It was an unfinished space, not even really a room where we had some storage shelves, our coats and shoes, and Ryan's workbench. In the spring, when "phase one" of the renos turned our storage room/craft room into a mud room, Ryan and his Dad had moved the door from the garage and covered over the hole, built a wall and doorframe to make this space into a room, and then built the closets.

So then this "phase two" renovation that they did last week, included framing around the cement foundation, drywall and mudding the walls and ceiling, and installing flooring.

They worked like crazy for four days and then, after John went home, we painted the walls, put up the baseboards and moved the furniture and school supplies in!
Yippee, it's finished!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a few finishing touches I want to add yet - blinds, a white board, a bulletin board, an area rug and some curtains across the closets. But those will have to wait till there's some more money in the bank. :)

Each of the kids has their own workspace. Yes, those are buckets that Evan and Grace are sitting on. I bought two tables from the elementary school that they used to go to but I had trouble finding chairs the right height to go with them. I was trying to figure out what height would be good so I asked Evan to sit on an old bucket. It seemed just right so I measured it and tried to look for chairs that were that height, but Evan wasn't having any of that. He wanted the bucket! So we put a cushion on top and it works great for him. I had a chair that was a little too tall but not too bad, that I had at Gracie's table but all she wanted was to sit on Evan's bucket, so Ryan found another bucket the same height in the garage and we cleaned it up and put a cushion on it for her! Oh well, it saved me spending thirty-five bucks apiece to buy them from the place that makes them for the schools!

Here we are sitting on the floor working on some building projects together.

It's a lovely, bright room and we have thoroughly enjoyed "doing school" there this week.
Thanks Ryan and John for your time and hard work - it is VERY much appreciated!!!

The room looks great Christa, and like my sis, I also love the paint color and flooring you chose - looks classy, yet bright and 'kid-friendly'. The buckets are cool too :)

The room is actually two colours but it's hard to tell in the pictures. Two walls are "lemon grass" which is kind of a yellowy green and the other two are "corn silk," which is the yellow we used in Rachel's room and we really liked it. I'm not always the best at choosing colours but I really like the way these colours look together and they make the room so bright and sunshiney (which we needed because it is in the basement), yet they don't feel overwhelmingly intense.

In all the times I've been to your place I have yet to see your "school room" isn't that sad. What kind of friend am I anyway?? Anyway, it looks good in the pictures and how fun to have that area to be organized and do the school thing.
